History of the band
The Stroud Area Wind Orchestra was founded in 2016. The wind orchestra’s first rehearsal was on the 7th June 2016 and held their first concert after just 7 weeks of rehearsals on the 26th July 2016.
The band has since grown in size and currently has an average of 40 playing members ranging in ages from 13 to over 75! Our members come from all walks of life and we welcome new players all year round.
Our existing Musical Director is Phil Storer.
Musical Director – Phil Storer
We are delighted to announce Phil Storer as our current Musical Director. Phil is a highly respected music educator and brings a wealth of experience to Stroud Area Wind Orchestra. Phil was director of Brookfield Music Centre for 5 years, where he increased its member from 98 to over 150.
Phil started playing cornet at the age of 7 in the junior band of the Salvation Army Gloucester, progressing through his grades to eventually study Music at Sheffield University under Major Peter Parkes. He was taught cornet and trumpet by Roger Webster (Black Dyke Mills Band) and
Maurice Murphy (London Symphony Orchestra). Phil has performed
with many brass ensembles, including Grimethorpe Colliery Band, Brighouse and Rastrick, James Shepherd Versatile Brass and most recently has recorded CDs for the Cory Band, conducted by Phil Harper.
The band runs a sponsorship scheme to help towards maintaining an important music making organisation in Stroud, Gloucestershire. The advantages to you are that the band performs in a variety of locations throughout the county and can advertise your company whilst playing.
